High Pressure Storage Cylinders 2009-12-13

High Pressure Storage Cylinders: With a recent explosion of an
aluminium SCUBA cylinder on the NSW Central Coast, the incident
triggered many Dive Store operators not only to consider scrapping many
of their old SCUBA cylinders that were manufactured pre-1990, but also
look closely at their High Pressure storage cylinders that are used in
conjunction with their HP compressors. Our Banksmeadow Hydrostatic
testing facility received a considerable influx of storage cylinders
from Dive centres not long after this incident. Many of these storage
cylinders were well out of the due test date and many were in extremely
poor condition. As a result of this more than 50% of the cylinders that
were submitted in for Inspection & testing failed on inspection due
to severe external corrosion. A typical cause of this external damage
was due to neglect in maintaining good external paint protection and
subjecting the cylinders to poor dive shop procedures by letting wet
wet-suits being stored in close proximity to the cylinders. Storage
cylinders in Australia should be Inspected & hydrostatically tested
every 5 years. Storage cylinders with certified dry gases in some cases
only require inspection & hydrostatic testing every 10 years. Our
experience over the past 40 years clearly indicates that there are very
few Dive Centres producing "Dry gas".
